FRIDAY
THE 13TH PART VIII:
JASON
TAKES MANHATTAN
(1989)
Starring
Kane Hodder
&
Kelly Hu

Jason was dead (somehow)
at the bottom of Crystal Lake when we last saw him.
Now, a yachting young
couple accidentally drop their anchor on a power line
(What a power line is
doing in Crystal Lake is beyond me) which Jason
happens to be lying
on. That somehow brings the killer back to life. I
guess it had to happen
some way. Anyhoo, the romancing couple on-board
don't have much time
left after that. Luckily for Jason, the guy tried to
scare his girlfriend
with an authentic Jason hockey mask (complete with
accurate battle scars!),
so Jason has something to wear.
Now the graduating class
of Crystal Lake are going on a cruise to New York
City (how they can cruise
from a lake to NYC is beyond me). The city is so
excited about it, it's
actually broadcasted on a Manhattan radio station
that the graduating
seniors of Crystal Lake are coming to town! So, let's
see - we have a bunch
of teenagers, ready to party on a boat - do you think
there might be a hockey
mask wearing stowaway. Right you are!
So Jason kills through
the youngsters, except for a few notables: A girl
who hallucinates about
a young "drowned" Jason, her overprotective legal
guardian, her love interest,
and a strapping young boxing dude. Anyway,
after Jason renders
the ship (aptly titled "Lazarus") useless, the survivors
(for now) get in a life
boat, and eventually paddle their way into New York
harbor. Mind you
the first thing they see in NY is the Statue of Liberty -
not sure what direction
Crystal Lake is... I didn't realize it was out in
the Atlantic somewhere!
I guess Mr. Voorhees didn't care for the boating
experience, as he chose
to swim to the Big Apple. Jason then hunts down the
remaining cast members
through the streets and subways of what is supposed
to be New York.
This movie stunk.
Now granted, the Friday series isn't the best group of
films, I realize that.
And the fans of the series realize that. But to
give us this shit is
unforgivable. The inconsistencies are all over the
place. The acting
is horrendous. No one cares about the girl's troubled
past. Jason doesn't
"Take" Manhattan, as promised, he's hardly there for 20
minutes! There
are no good kills - they're all simple stabbings or
cuttings, and most of
them happen off screen. The only different kill is
the very silly beheading
by uppercut. The jokes were unfunny and
unnecessary. The
synth 80s music made the movie seem actually worse than it
was (if that's possible).
The only good thing in this movie is Kane Hodder.
He really plays the
character well (not that it's a tough character, but
damn, he sure is menacing
looking).
Oh, and someone explain
this to me. Has Jason all of the sudden gained some
sort of teleportation
powers? The scenes where he seemingly jumps from
location to location
ahead of his running victims were ridiculous. And do
we really need to see
Jason puke as he sees toxic waste coming his way? And
to call for his mommy?
Ugh! And then after the toxic waste hits him...
what was that?
Disastrous film. Stay away from this one, even if you're a
Jason fan.
