MOVIES THE HILLS HAVE EYES
Quick
Rating: *** This remake of Wes Craven's 1977 cult classic holds its own, while paying homage to the source material. The story hasn't changed much, but we do get more in-depth about the characters. And the look and feel of the film is more up-to-date. It moves at a good pace, and it has a gritty 70's feel to it. Not as gritty (literally) as the old movie, but it does imbed you into the character's situation. The look of the desert is great. Jupiter and his gang look menacing. There's plenty of gore, and scares. Overall, I think Aja did a decent job updating this film. The film has its flaws (mostly the typical horror-movie cliches of bad decision making for no apparent reason), but so did the original. The story, in case you don't know, revolves around a family travelling through the deserts of New Mexico. A couple is going to San Diego to celebrate their 25th anniversary, and they're bringing the whole family with them. They take advice from a stranger and head down an unmarked dirt road for miles before totaling their truck. Little do they know that it was deliberate, and there are people - mutated angry bloodthirsty people - in the hills around them, watching their every move. Quality:
