A young coed, interested by the teachings of her professor (Lee), decides
to travel to a small town in New England, infamous for its witchcraft hundreds
of years ago. The town, Whitewood, MA, is hidden away, unvisited by
outsiders, and unchanged for centuries. They did a good job on the
city - it was dark, foggy, and creepy. Very atmospheric, and it provided
a great setting for this witch story. The girl stays at the Ravens
Inn (the only inn in the town, and it was recommended by her teacher), where,
almost 300 years earlier, the burning of an accused witch took place.
The girl doesn't have much luck befriending the locals, except for one girl,
also new to the town, who is selling old books. There is certainly
something suspicious about the town, but she can't figure out what.
When news of the girl's disappearance reaches home, her brother and her boyfriend
(separately) go to Whitewood to find her. This leads to a confrontation
with the witches who still inhabit Whitewood, and a pretty decent ending.
The movie was well acted, especially Mr. Lee and the lady who played Mrs.
Newlys. The black and white cinematography gives the film a very eerie
feel, and overall it's a good little film. Nothing gruesome or scary
or fast-paced, but a decent story about evil witches in a drearily romantic
old towne.
