HOUSE OF DRACULA
(1945)
Starring Lon Chaney Jr, John Carradine & Lionel Atwill

Quick Rating:  *

House of Dracula is another attempt to revive the monster movies by Universal Studios by combining all the monsters into one movie.  This is a sequel to House of Frankenstein (1944), and we start out with Count Dracula (who, by the way died in the last movie, and no explanation is given on his "recovery") entering the house of a doctor.  He tells the doctor of his "condition" and asks for a cure.  The doctor, who did not believe in vampirism before their conversation, eagerly takes his case.

While working with the count, the doctor has another visitor - Larry Talbot (Chaney).  And yes, Talbot was shot with a silver bullet at the end of House of Frankenstein, and yet, here he is, alive and well.  And again, there's no mention of his "recovery".  Talbot wants to see the doctor to find a cure for his disease, but the doctor is busy and Talbot gets impatient and leaves.  He has himself imprisoned, and then the doctor decides to help him, too.

The story moves slowly along, and really has no point.  The doctor is trying to help Dracula and the Wolfman, and his hunchbacked assistant/nurse.  Along they way they happen upon the Frankenstein's monster.  Ho hum, let's try to revive him.  There is no excitement in this script or movie to be found.  Dracula attacks no one.  The Wolfman attacks no one.  The Frankenstein's monster has about 20 seconds of screen time.  The scariest thing in the picture is when Drac gives a blood transfusion!  Oooh, scary!

This is a poor addition to the Universal stable, and it marked the end of their classic era.  Recommended to completists, but no one else.
