HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL
(1959)
Starring Vincent Price

Quick Rating:  ***

A wealthy man (Price) and his fourth wife rent out a haunted house for a night, and invite 5 strangers to spend the night.  Mr. Loren will pay those who stay through the night $10,000 - a lot of cake back in the day.  The 5 strangers don't even know each other - there's a pilot, a writer, the owner of the house, a psychiatrist, and a typist who works for Loren's company.

The guests arrive to the house in hearses, and the night gets stranger from there.  Something weird is going on in the house.  A chandalier falls, lights flickers, noises are heard, ghosts are seen.  The house has a violent history, with 7 murders taking place in it.  The owner is spooked out of his mind, and lets everyone else know it.   At midnight, guns are added to the mix, which go nicely with the alcohol they've been drinking.  Now you've got to wonder if ghosts are what they should really be afraid of... or is it each other?

There's definitely a campy feel to parts of this movie.  But the black & white atmosphere, along with Price, who is at his best, and some pretty good supporting acting pull the movie along.  It moves right along, even if there are holes in the plot and issues that never really get resolved, and it finds room to throw in a twist or two.  It's an enjoyable old horror movie.
