THE
HUMAN MONSTER
aka
THE DARK EYES OF LONDON
(1940)
Starring
Bela Lugosi

There have been several
drowned bodies found in the Thames River over the
past few months, and
Scotland Yard has no leads. All the victims have life
insurance policies through
Dr. Orloff (Lugosi) and all were blind. Dr.
Orloff helps the Dearborn
home for the Blind, but he also uses the home for
more sinister purposes.
After yet another victim, and the daughter of that
victim returning home
from America, one detective and his American companion
hit the case hard.
It's an old film, with
a small budget, so I'm not gonna rip on it too hard.
The story is somewhat
interesting, and the acting isn't overdone like many
of the works of the
time. I'm not sure why one of the guys working at the
Blind home is a hunchback
and has a monstrous face. Or why the blind people
walk and grunt like
zombies. But I guess that's atmosphere! Bela is great,
but doesn't have nearly
enough screen time. I had a big problem
understanding what was
being said in this movie, and that was its biggest
detraction. I
don't know if it was just the audio quality, the English
accents, or the outdated
vernacular, but I left many scenes not
understanding what was
said.
