I BURY THE LIVING
(1958)
Featuring murderous pushpins
Quick Rating: **
Bob Kraft is an executive who's put in charge of the Immortal Hills cemetery,
much like his ancestors had. He meets the caretaker, an old Scotsman,
who is played by an actor who is neither old not Scottish and both are apparent.
Anyway, there's a giant map of the entire cemetery in the office. On
this map are all the plots within the grounds, and those plots that are occupied
are marked with black pins, while those that are on reserve are marked with
white pins. A young couple, supposedly friends of Bob, just got married
and (how romantic) have chosen plots. Bob marks the two plots with
pins, however the pins are black, not white. Later, the couple is found
dead. Bob has a creepy feeling that he had something to do with it.
He tests his theory by sticking a plot at random with a black pin.
That man ends up dying. Bob tests his theory again, and again, and
each time someone dies, he's convinced that he's guilty, and everyone around
him tells him he's crazy. Well the people around him end up dying
too, as they dare him to pin their names. It really gets interesting
when Bob decides to determine the extent of his powers.
It's a different idea and the plot is interesting. The movie is very
slow, though. The acting is subpar to say the least, especially the
aforementioned Scotsman. But there is some cool atmosphere (which is
what they call it when a movie has absolutely no budget so they have to shoot
in 2 locations at most and it keeps the movie feeling small).
