THE INTRUDER
(1961)
aka SHAME
aka I HATE YOUR GUTS!

Starring: William Shatner
Directed by: Roger Corman

What would you get when you mix a director known for B-movies and one of the worst actors ever?  A surprisingly good movie!

A pre-Star Trek Shatner stars as a racist who visits a small southern town whose schools have just become integrated.  Shatner is determined to get a rise out of the "good white folk", but he learns that once a man incites a mob, he cannot control it.

There is a lot of racial context in this appropriately black and white film, and Corman handles it well.  It's tough to believe that such fervent hatred existed just a few decades ago (and even tougher to believe that it still exists).  Shatner gives convincing speeches, speaking about how the Commies and Jews are trying to weaken our country by mongrelization (i.e. Desegregation).  The speeches incite the locals to yell "nigger", hold "Back to Africa" signs, burn crosses and bomb black churches.

Shatner is a big ham (surprise!) and he spends as much time seducing married women and high school girls as he does spouting hatred.  There's also a touching scene where he makes gun noises and pretends he's shooting blacks from his hotel room.
