THE INVISIBLE GHOST
(1941)
Starring Bela Lugosi

Another cheaply made horror movie starring Bela Lugosi.  Bela is Mr.
Kessler, a seemingly normal man whose wife cheated on him and then
supposedly died in a car crash with the other man.  Kessler misses her so
and even pretends to dine with her on their anniversary.  It turns out
though, that his wife is alive, although she has amnesia, and weird powers
(more later), and the gardener is keeping her alive in the basement of his
cottage.  He steals food from the home and brings it to her.  Now even
though she is thought dead, Kessler believes his wife will return one day.

The thing is, she has returned.  Numerous times.  And Kessler has seen her.
Right outside his window.  But, I guess the sight of his "dead" wife causes
him to go into a trance-like state and then indiscriminately murder whoever
may be around.  And then he wakes up the next morning not remembering one
bit of it, and is as shocked as anyone else that someone had been murdered.
So after the murder of the new maid, coincidences point towards Kessler's
daughter's boyfriend.  He is brought to trial and is found guilty, and given
the death penalty.

Now the filmmakers must have liked that actor's work (I don't see how)
because "ta-da!" here comes that guy's twin brother (played by the same
actor).  Now he and the Kesslers try to find out what is going on.

Ignoring the ridiculous storyline, this movie isn't all bad.  There is some
interesting direction, including moving cameras, shifting of focus, and some
interesting lighting.  There is some black comedy (and I'm not talking about
the butler! - who does a great job by the way).  And Bela of course is
great.  His transformations in and out of his wife-induced hypnosis are well
done.  What I did not like about Invisible Ghost is that it never really
explained what was happening.  How did his wife end up with the gardener?
Why is she crazy?  How can she hypnotize her husband?  Why does she want him
to kill people?  Why was a dead guy standing behind a curtain?  Why was the
picture torn?  So many questions... all unanswered.
