JASON X
(2002)
Starring Kane Hodder

For the 10th installment in the Friday the 13th series (almost a decade
after the 9th), the creators decided to send Jason to the future and to
outer space.  The horror monster in outer space, to me, never works.  It
didn't work with Leprechaun in space, or with Critters in space.  And it
doesn't work here, either.  Although this movie is better than both of
those, it's not by much.

Ok, for the story, we start out in the near future (the date is never really
told, just sometime between 2008 & 2055).  Jason Voorhees has been caught,
and is being held at the Crystal Lake Research Facility (catchy name, no?).
Several attempts were made to execute him, and all have failed.  The plan of
attack now is to cryogenically freeze him so at least he's out of the way.
However, another group wants him alive so they can study his regenerative
abilities.  Under their noses, Jason escapes his chains (using them as
weapons) and is on the kill again.  One researcher is able to corner him
into a freezing chamber, and put ol' Jason on ice.  But, not before the
masked one's machete catches her flesh, and causes the whole chamber (and
her) to be frozen.

Then, we travel to the far future, 2455 to be exact.  A college field trip
discovers the cryogenic chamber with the female researcher and Jason, and
retrieve the two bodies as scientific discoveries.  On their spaceship (they
have to travel back to Earth 2, since Earth 1 is barren and unlivable - but
it makes for great field trips!), the team is able to bring the woman back
to life (and heal her stab wound).  So, the futuristic space ship and its
futuristic team of scientists and college students and marines are soon to
meet up with a thawed out Jason Voorhees.  He hacks his way through almost
everyone on the ship before stopped by an android.  Jason then becomes
Uber-Jason (yes, you read that correctly) when the automatic regenerating
computer thingamabob replaces his missing flesh with bulletproof metal and
gives him a futuristic mask and red eyes (yes, both of them!).  The
remaining crew are really in trouble now.

Bad script and pretty poor acting.  The story leaves a lot to be desired.
And I really didn't like Jason's nappy looks-like-pubes haircut - what was
that all about?  Why is there a need to put Jason in space?  If you want to
have an "Alien" type story, then do an Alien movie, not a Friday the 13th!
Most of the special effects are computer effects, and low budget ones at
that, which lessen the feel of the film.  There were some interesting kills,
my favorite being the freeze-drying and smashing of a scientist's head.
Overall, though, it was pretty poor - surprised it was released to the
theaters.
