JESSE
JAMES MEETS
FRANKENSTEIN'S
DAUGHTER
(1966)
Featuring...
the title tells you what it features!

The title says it all
in this campy sci-fi western. Unfortunately, it does
say it all. No
surprises, no excitement - a rather blase entry in the
library of cult films.
Set in the Old West, where Maria Frankenstein
(granddaughter of the
great count... yes, yes, I know the title says
"Frankenstein's Daughter",
but she's his granddaughter!) and her elderly
brother (huh?) have
converted a matte painting into a laboratory. Why the
American Southwest,
you ask? Well, the isolation and the frequent
electrical storms, that's
why! What better place to conduct nefarious
experiments? Unfortunately,
the local Mexican peasants aren't turning out
to be the best guinea
pigs - they keep dying. And Ms Frankenstein only has
one of her grandfather's
artificial brains left (his secret of making
artificial brains died
with him - don't ask!). So this last experiment
needs to succeed.
Cut to two shirtless
men fake-fighting outside a saloon. The more muscular
of the two, Hank, wins,
and we learn he is Jesse James partner. The two are
on the run, and after
the fistfight, they meet up with the Wild Bunch, for a
stagecoach holdup.
But the robbery was a ruse and Jesse and Hank are lucky
to escape. Hank
was unlucky, however, to catch a bullet. Jesse & Hank bump
into the mexican family
who has been losing sons to Frankenstein's
experiments (although
they don't know it), and the daughter, Juanita, wants
to help the outlaws.
She takes them to the local doctor - yeah, you guessed
it, Frankenstein.
And she's uber-excited to see the Herculean Hank, being
the prime candidate
for her final experiment! So, the crazed doctor turns
Hank into Igor, a mindless
monster, and in the final minute of this film,
Jesse and Igor confront
each other. (Not worth the wait).
Like I said in the beginning,
this was one boring film. The most
interesting thing about
it is the title. There is some camp factor, but
certainly not enough
to make it worth viewing. The acting is atrocious, and
the script seems to
be thrown together. Many holes in the plot - Why does
Juanita leave her elderly
folks in the wilderness alone, never to return to
them? How does
the druggist explain his extra-long stay in the backroom,
when he comes out empty-handed?
Why is Ms. Frankenstein's brother so much
older than her?
Why does the artificial brain need a sprinkling of salt to
become activated?
Why can Igor only say one word ... "Juan... Nita"? Good
for some laughs, but
not enough!
