KING OF THE ZOMBIES
(1941)
Starring Mantan Moreland

Quick Rating:  ***

I enjoyed this film.  It's not a great piece of film-making by any stretch.  Some of the acting is atrocious.  And as a straight horror film, it's no good either.  I think it's the comic stylings of Mantan Moreland that make this movie worth watching.  Yes, by today's standard, this movie is racist.  But if you can overlook that, this is one funny film.  Mantan's reactions to learning about zombies and about seeing them are hilarious!  "Zombies? What's them?"  "Dead folks... what walks around."

Three guys in a plane over the Carribbean crash land on an island.  They find a creepy mansion, and are greeted by a doctor, who does his best Bela Lugosi impression as he walks down the stairs, candle in hand.  The doctor isn't the only strange thing about that place, as Mantan soon finds out.  The dead are living again, thanks to the local voodoo practioners.  The plot is really inane, but if you just try to enjoy the movie, you're sure to.

Best quote:  "Mister, that's something that ain't never no good for nobody to do no time."
