THE LAST MAN ON EARTH
(1964)
Starring
Vincent Price
Quick Rating:
**
A depressing look at an apocalyptic world where vampire/zombies rule the
night. Vincent Price is the Last Man on Earth. He spends his
day
collecting the things he needs - mirrors, garlic, gas, wood. You see,
there
are slow-witted and slow-moving undead beings who roam the night. They
cannot stand sunlight, nor their reflection, nor garlic. Price has
been
acting on his own for 3 years, hiding from the killers in the dark hours,
and killing them in the daylight. He is depressed and often thinks
back to
his past - before the world was like this. When he had a loving wife
and
daughter.
We get an overly long flashback in the middle of this film, explaining how
an airborne disease turned into an epidemic, killing almost everyone.
Price
was a scientist, hurredly looking for a cure. Meanwhile, his daughter
and
wife contract the disease and pass away, as does most everyone else.
Price does a great job, as always. Didn't care for any of the other
actors
(not that there are many). The mood is set well, and the atmosphere
is
creepy, even if the vampire/zombies are not well defined nor very
threatening as villains. The feelings of melancholy and loneliness
are well
represented on the screen, as Price hopes of finding a cure, and others who
have not been infected. The ending is good, and overall, it's a well
told,
interesting story. For a B-movie.
