LEGENDS
OF THE SUPERHEROES
(1979)
Starring
Adam West, Burt Ward,
Frank
Gorshin, Ed McMahon & Ruth Buzzi

This is a failed live-action
comedy/action TV show that produced two
episodes, "The Challenge"
and "The Roast". It was made in the late 70s and
starred West, Ward &
Gorshin with their respective roles from the 60's
Batman show. Of
course, now they're a little too old to be in spandex, but
hey, it's for the greater
good, right? The premise of the show was to have
a bunch of superheroes
(a la the Superfriends cartoon) and have them battle
a group of their archnemeses
(like the Legion of Doom from the Superfriends
cartoon). So not
only do we have Batman and Robin, but also live action
versions of the Flash,
Green Lantern, Hawkman, Black Canary, the Huntress,
and Captain Marvel.
And the villains include Sinestro, the Riddler, Solomon
Grundy, the Weather
Wizard, Giganta, an evil scientist, and the wizardly
Mordru, leader of the
supervillains.
In "The Challenge", the
mad doctor character (with an obvious bald wig and
rubbery ears) has devised
a doomsday device to destroy all life on Earth
with the exception of
them. The superheroes find out about it (due to the
Riddler's need to give
them clues) and split up to try to stop their
sinister plan.
They plan to meet and share information at a local gas
station, where the villains
have disguised Solomon Grundy (yes, the big pale
creepy looking guy)
as an attendant. The superheroes can't recognize him
with a hat on.
Yes, I'm serious. The rest of the episode features the
heroes trying to find
where the villains are located, and the villains
trying to slow them
down (by posing as gas station attendants, or used car
salesmen, or little
boys selling lemonade, or a female palm reader, or
simply by driving around
on jet skis).
In "The Roast", the superheroes
hold a roast and toast to themselves, with
none other than Ed McMahon
as the host. We are treated to stories and jokes
and song-and-dance numbers.
Retired Man and Ghetto Man also make
appearances. It
is painfully bad, but painfully funny as well.
The absurdity of these
brightly colored spandex clad heroes is just
hilarious. The
magical special effects (the Flash being fast, Green
Lantern's green beam,
the Weather Wizard's control of weather) are very
laughable (what would
you expect from a 70's TV show with no budget?). The
sound is poor and the
sets are all on a sound stage (where you can hear the
wicker chairs that the
villains sit in). But it is very tongue in cheek,
much like the old Batman
show, but none of the characters have the charm and
cheesy acting abilities
of Adam West (well, except for Adam himself). This
is a must see for any
fan of these comic book characters or any fan of
really cheesy shows/movies.
