MAD
MONSTER PARTY?
(1967)
Starring
Boris Karloff &
Phyllis
Diller

From the creators who
brought us Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Frosty
the Snowman (Rankin/Bass)comes
this Halloween special, full of claymation
monsters. The
story has Baron Von Frankenstein (Karloff) organizing a
special convention of
monsters so that he can announce his retirement and
his successor.
So, one by one we get introduced to the creatures who are
invited to the party
- Dracula, the Mummy, the Werewolf, Dr. Jekyll/Mr.
Hyde, the Hunchback,
the Invisible Man, etc. Also invited, though, is the
Baron's nephew, Felix,
who has annoying allergies and works in a pharmacy.
Apparently, he is the
only relative left in Frankenstein's family, and the
Baron has decided to
make him his successor. Once wind of that gets around
at the party, all the
monsters get upset, and they plot and scheme to get
their way.
The animation is very
similar to the Christmas classics we all know. And
seeing all the monsters
together is cool, but this movie just dragged on and
on. The lame monster
puns, the 60's themed music and dance numbers all made
me wonder what the creators
were smoking when they made this. But, some of
that could be overlooked.
My major problem with "Mad Monster Party?" was
Phyllis Diller.
She was the bride of the monster, but instead of playing a
part and trying to be
the character from "Bride of Frankenstein", she was
Phyllis Diller.
She looked, sounded and acted like Phyllis Diller, going
through Diller's repertoire
of jokes and proceeded to laugh hysterically at
each one.
So, if you can overlook
logic lapses, outright stupidity, annoying music,
and Phyllis Diller,
there is some fun to be had while watching "Mad Monster
Party?".
