Rating: **
This movie takes a different spin on the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story.
It's told from the perspective of one of the lowly servants of the affluent
doctor, Mary Reilly (Roberts). She is happy to have the job, and is
excited to have some time alone with Dr. Jekyll. However, none of his
staff really know what he's up to, but they do know that things have changed
in recent months. And when the doctor tells his entire staff that he
will have an assistant around from time to time, probably only at night,
a Mr. Hyde, the workers are abuzz with gossip. Who is this guy?
Has anyone seen him?
When they do end up seeing him more and more, they wish they hadn't.
And Mary gets personal time with Mr. Hyde, which isn't exactly comfortable.
She learns more about the mysterious man, and it's nothing good.
This movie looks good, has good acting, but really isn't all that good.
It plods along at a snail's pace, and there didn't seem to be any point to
it. Was it a love story? It wasn't a very good one. Was
it a horror movie? There were hardly any scares. Was it
a period movie? You can't really tell when the events take place, because
it was so isolated in location. I don't know. It was kind of
interesting to see the Jekyll/Hyde thing from the people around the doctor,
but other than that, there wasn't much here.
