Special Effects by Ray Harryhausen

Quick Rating:  ****

Meriam C. Cooper and the others who brought us King Kong and Son of Kong are back 16 years after the big ape climbed the Empire State Building.

As the movie starts out, a little girl living in Africa gets her meager possessions together so that she can purchase a baby gorilla from some travelling natives.

Twelve years later, a night club business man, not unlike Carl Denham (and played by the same guy - Robert Armstrong), travels to Africa to round up animals for his new Africa-themed night club.  Then a giant gorilla stumbles upon their camp, and the business man is awestruck.  He and his cowboy friends try to lasso the great ape.  They end up convincing the girl to come to Hollywood with her monkey, named Joe Young.

The girl and Joe are the main attractions at the new night club, and a ton of money is being made.  However, the girl and especially Joe are homesick and don't like the shackles of show buisness.  The straw that breaks Joe's back are when he's ridiculed during a show and harrassed afterwards by a couple of drunk patrons who give the monkey some alcohol.  He goes ape shit and after a wild attack, he is sentenced to die.  Can they figure out a way to save Joe?

The ape special effects are much smoother this time out.  Overall though, I think the effects are a little worse.  There's a good amount of reflection in some screens/glass backgrounds.  Quite a few strings/rods can be seen in some scenes with Joe.  But, it's a fun movie, and enjoyable for the whole family.
