A popular writer of romance
novels gets caught in a Maine blizzard, ending
up driving off the road
and down a hill. Luckily he is saved. His
self-proclaimed "#1
Fan" happened to be following him that night, and pulled
his injured body from
the car. Luckily, she is also a nurse, and takes care
of the author, bracing
his fractured legs and dislocated shoulder.
Unluckily, she is psycho,
and when his latest writings don't live up to her
standards, she takes
out her anger on him. He's trapped in the middle of
nowhere, relying on
her to live, but she may deliver him death.
There's not a lot going
on in this movie - I've pretty much described the
whole plot above - but
it drips with suspense. The audience is there
suffering with Caan
and the hopelessness of his situation. The "hobbling"
scene will stick in
your head for quite a while after viewing. The acting
is phenomenal.
Bates happy do-gooder turned crazy killer is her best work
ever. And Caan
is fantastic as the trapped author, scheming to find a way
out. Richard Farnsworth,
in a small role as the town's sheriff, is also
worth note. Reiner
really delivers, giving us one of the handful of movies
based on a Stephen King
book that is truly great.
