THE MONSTER HUNTER

aka NATURAL SELECTION
(2000)
Starring David Carradine

Quick Rating : ***

What caught my eye first about this movie, after the title, was a blurb on the back of the DVD package which states "Evil Dead meets Natural Born Killers".  Now that is one big statement.  Especially to a fan of both movies, as I am.  So of course I was curious.  And add a known actor such as Carradine, and you've got me.  And you know what?  It's pretty damn good.

A serial killer is loose in small town Texas, and the cops are having a tough times following his tracks.  Enter an FBI detective (Carradine) who is known as the monster hunter.  Yeah, he's a little unorthodox, but he has a reputation, and some damn good hunting skills.  As the film goes on, we learn more and more about the serial killer and ultimately find out who he is.  The movie switches between scenes of real action, and of a documentary in progress about the killer.  The interviews from the documentary are hilarious.  Even if the acting in them isn't all that great, it's bizarre, but very believable characters from American suburbia with all their weird habits and thought processes.  The real action focuses mostly on the sheriff, the detective, a young couple, and a mailman and his wife.

The movie was very entertaining, and had a sort of attitude in its storytelling.  It totally kept my interest and made me laugh many times.  Plus there are some good acting jobs.  Willie, the sheriff, the psychiatrist (who had me in stitches), and many others... were all great.  Carradine was ok.  Something about his lisp really bothers me.  But he played a good nut.  Gorehounds may be disappointed as there weren't really "monsters" in the movie (although Carradine does see them as monsters), and while there is some blood, there isn't much gore.  But the movie doesn't suffer from it at all.  A little kooky, and knowingly low budget, this was a great suprise of a movie.
