MONSTER
ISLAND
(2004)
Starring
Carmen Electra & Adam West

Not only is this a made-for-TV
movie, it's a made-for-MTV movie. A high
school senior wins an
MTV contest for him and his entire class to go to a
remote island for a
party. The island, however, has barrels of dripping
green goo (and they
may have been some H-bombs dropped in the area). We're
introduced to the kid's
friends (one nerd and one party guy), his sister,
and his ex-girlfriend
(who has a new interest). Carmen Electra plays
herself, except that
her character has talent. She is the main performer of
the night's events.
She sings and dances... well, until a giant flying ant
comes flying in and
kidnaps her and her bodyguard (whose name is Eightball).
Talk about a music critic!
The kid decides that
he's going to save her. Partly because his
ex-girlfriend wants
him to be a man of action, and partly because Carmen
flirted with him backstage.
So he and his friends go off into the jungle
towards the giant mountain
to which the insect took Carmen. Along the way,
they encounter many
other strange creatures - a giant praying mantis, bog
monsters, and Adam West!
West plays a crazy old scientist (Dr. Harryhausen)
with a ridiculous looking
horseshoe crab pet. So, off they go to the
mountain where the giant
ants, and an ancient kung-fu fighting culture await
them!
There was nothing
new or all that exciting in this little film. Yes, it was
done for TV, and it
had no budget, and I know, the effects were supposed to
look cheesy. But,
when they do that on purpose, it doesn't have the same
laughter quality.
It was good to see Mr. West, and... not much else. Bad
jokes, bad acting, bad
action, and it had the feeling of an afterschool
special. Ugh.
