MOON
OF THE WOLF
(1972)
Featuring
a Cajun wolfman

This made-for-TV movie
is more murder mystery than monster movie, but it is
well acted and well
plotted. A body of a local girl, Ellie, is found in the
bayou. It appears
that she's been ravaged by wild dogs, but after the town
doctor examines her,
he concludes that it was murder. The sheriff now is on
the hunt, gathering
as much info as he can about the girl, and her family,
and who she associated
with. All the town's secrets come out, as he finds
out she's pregnant,
and that an old flame of his has come back to town, and
the sick, elderly father
of Ellie keeps screaming something in French -
"loup garou".
Of course, the sheriff doesn't get anybody who speaks French
to translate this -
and even when somebody mentions they know french, he
doesn't ask them to
translate!
So, the mystery is well
played, with little tidbits of info coming out as it
goes. Only the
final 20 or so minutes do we actually know it's a werewolf.
The wolf makeup isn't
great, but it's passible for early 70's TV. There's
some action towards
the end, but not a lot, and certainly not much in the
way of blood.
But the story doesn't really need it.
Overall, it's a decent
murder mystery, not much in the way of a horror
movie, and not really
providing us anything new or terribly exciting. But
it's well done, and
a decent way to spend a sleepy sunday morning.
