MOVIES THE MUMMY
Quick
Rating: **** An English archaeological team in Egypt have made a great find - an intact mummy, and a mysterious box. The curious scientists open the box despite the curses placed upon those who do so, and they find the sacred Scroll of Thoth. The mummified body of Imhotep is awoken by the reading of the scroll and he disappears. Ten years later, Imhotep has removed his wrappings and has placed himself in the local society as Ardath Bay. Most people don't realize that in this movie, the "mummy" does not wear his wrappings but rather a Fez, and that he talks! Anyway, Bay helps the current archaeologists to find the tomb of the princess Anckesen-Amon. As the story unfolds, we find out his motives for doing so, and that he has the power to fulfill his devious desires. The mummy in this film is more empathetic than in other versions. Yes, he's the villain, and has amazing undead powers of persuasion. But underneath it all, he has suffered for love and yearns to love again. It's a horror movie, but it's also sort of a love story. The movie is well done. It is dated, with some of the acting, and some of the pacing. But it still is effective. Karloff is great, the atmosphere is great, and the storytelling is great. I would much rather have people watch this film than the 1999 Brendon Fraser turd. Return to the classics! Quality: 7.0 Visuals:
