MOVIES THE MUMMY'S HAND
Quick
Rating: *** This, the first "sequel" to the 1932 "Mummy" features some footage from that movie (in a different light), but that's really the only connection. The movie starts out with a changing of the guard of the High Priest of Karnak, who is the keeper of Kharis, a mummy kept alive by dissolved tana leaves. You see, in ancient Egypt, Kharis loved the princess Ananka, and with her untimely passing, Kharis attempted to give her eternal life by stealing the sacred tana leaves. He was caught, however, and punished by being buried alive (and having his tongue removed!). So, through the generations since, the High Priest of Karnak keeps Kharis alive by supplying him with dissolved tana leaves. He can also use Kharis to kill those that defile the tomb of princess Ananka. Enter our two "heroes" (more like a second-rate comedy team) - two archaeologists from Brooklyn. They are in Cairo and searching for the tomb of Ananka. With the financial backing of a magician and the help of his daughter, they attempt to find this hidden tomb. They do find a tomb, but it is Kharis's, and from that moment on, everyone has the curse of Amon-Ra upon them. This is a decent Mummy movie. Very standard - archaeologists disrupt the tomb, Mummy slowly and silently kills those trespassers. The acting is ok - I've definitely seen worse in similar pictures, but they're not gonna win any awards, either. The comedy is tolerable, but not funny. The Mummy looks cool and his scenes are scary (for the time). The problem is that his scenes are few and far between. As a parting note, I thought it was very funny that most of the film we hear about how difficult it is to find Ananka's tomb, and then, when we do see it, it is a giant temple with huge statues and staircases, not hidden from view at all. You mean to tell me that no one has "discovered" this temple yet?? Quality: 5.5 Visuals:
