Unnecessary remake of a classic horror film.  The script is almost identical to the original.  There are some interesting twists and differences from the first, and some of the characters' fates have changed, but for most of it, it was a very similiar remake.  For those of you who don't know the story, it's very simple.  A brother & sister are visiting a grave in a cemetery far from home.  A strange man approaches them... but he is no normal man.  He is a zombie.  The brother dies.  The sister escapes, and tries to find refuge in a seemingly abandoned home.  A black guy joins her and they, with the help of a few other people, try to devise a plan to survive.

This version came off as cheesy to me.  The acting was too over the top.  The acting in the original, while not great, was realistic.  I truly believed these people were in this situation and trying to deal with it as normal people would.  This version, their actions and words seemed very forced.  This movie also lacked the atmosphere and mood of the original.  It seemed very cookie cutter - have the zombies attack at the dictated times....  I don't know.  It lacked the punch that the '68 version had.

The zombie effects were pretty good.  Although, with the master of splatter Tom Savini at the helm, I figured this film would have more gore for us.  But surprisingly few gore scenes.  I actually kinda liked the ending to this one.  Romero changed it up a bit, but it was still poignant.  Too bad the rest of the movie wasn't.
