NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW
(1995)
Starring Stephen Root

Quick Rating:  **

A very formulaic horror movie.  The makers of this film must have had their trusty checklist when creating this average fright flick.  A serial killer.  check.  He can't be killed easily.  check.  Drunk kids.  check.  Adulterous kids.  check.  People get killed in bizarre ways.  check.  There's some mystical way to destroy seemingly indestructible killer.  check.  Toss in a couple boobs and some horrible one-liners.  check.   Well, I guess on paper, this film can't lose!

After some drunk teens break a stone tablet in the middle of a corn field, some mysterioius rays shoot out of the hole and bring a scarecrow to life.  The scarecrow then goes on a killing spree of all the major personalities of the town.

The "heroes" of our film are the mayor's daughter (who has returned home after ... what? I don't know why she left, but she's back.  Isn't that all that matters?) and her new love interest, Dylan (boy, that was a popular name for characters in the 90's).  The girl brings Dylan to meet her family, and we are introduced to the Mayor, the Sheriff (Stephen Root, who you may remember as Jimmy James from Newsradio or Milton "the stapler guy" from Office Space), the town priest, and the town farmer.  What an enterprising family!

So, the scarecrow, who looks like one of the lamest villains ever, uses his unmentioned powers slaying everyone with hay and straw and sickles.  He's lame looking because he has a sack over his head, and one button for an eye.  "Oooh, what a hideous button!  He's looking at me with that terrifying button!  Make him stop!  I'll never sew again!  I promise!"  There are some interesting effects, but nothing groundbreaking, or even all that interesting.   I'd say it's only for fans of the cheap slasher movies.
