MOVIES PITCH BLACK
Quick
Rating: **** A spaceship transporting 40 settlers and 1 criminal is interrupted during its long journey by some sort of collision. The crew is woken and has to prepare for a crash landing. They crash on the nearby planet, which seems to be desolate, deserted, and dry. The sky is unbelievably bright, with multiple suns. As they explore the area, they find remnants of life, but no life itself. The dangerous criminal, named Riddick (Diesel) escapes from holding, and while the survivors are scared of him, he is not their only worry. No signs of water, deserted encampments, boneyards. It's enough to drive anyone batty. And just wait until the large nearby planet eclipses the sun... it turns into a whole nother world. Hiding in the shadows beneath the planet is something hideous and bloodthirsty. And pretty scary! The movie was done very well for the cheap budget and no-name cast (I believe this was Vin Diesel's first movie). The lighting effects are great, and the special effects are good. The focus is not on the creatures or the sci-fi gadgets or the visual effects, it is on the characters and their situation. It's a well told story, with plenty of suspence. I was pleasantly surprised seeing this in the theaters, and I enjoyed it again on DVD. Quality: 6.5 Visuals:
