RETURN
OF THE FLY
(1959)
Starring
Vincent Price

This black and white
sequel to the color original takes place 15 years
later. After the
death of his mother, Phillipe (son of Andre "The Fly") is
haunted by questions
of his father's mysterious death. He persuades his
uncle (played again
by Price) to fill him in on the details. Phillipe is
now determined to follow
in his father's footsteps and succeed where he
failed. Phillipe
builds the disintegrator/integrator with reluctant help
from his uncle.
The initial experiments show some promise, but then an
investigator interferes
and ends up with guinea pig feet. Phillipe is then
betrayed, and as a sick
joke is transformed into the Fly, much like his
father.
I enjoyed this film.
While not as great as the original, it was good as far
as sequels go.
Yes, much of it was formulaic, but the plot (at least the
first half) was interesting
and different enough from the original. The
second half turned into
a monster/revenge flick. I like the B&W, although
I'm not sure why it
was used after the original was in color. The acting is
very good, with Price
leading the way. However, the special effects are
laughable. Where
you could excuse this in the first movie, this movie
focuses too much on
the fly effects, and it takes away from the
film. Overall,
it's a decent sequel to be seen by fans of the first.
