ROBOT
MONSTER
(1953)

Boy oh boy, has science
fiction come a long way since this film. We start
off with a couple of
kids out in the fields. They stumble upon a cave, in
which two men are "working".
They claim to be archaeologists, but they are
dressed nicely - one
with a leather jacket and the other with a monocle (Ok,
maybe I imagined the
monocle, but he does have one bad accent). The boy
starts asking about
space-men, but before long his worried mother finds him
and they all go back
for a family picnic, and for some reason a nap? Then
there is lightning and
dinosaurs fighting. No, I'm not kidding. Then, the
kid wakes up next the
cave, which now has a stylish bubble machine outside.
And out of the cave
walks ... the Robot Monster. But his friends call him
Ro-Man.
How can I describe Ro-Man?
Well, he's been called the silliest looking
monster in cinema history,
and it's difficult to argue that point. He
appears to be a large
man in a gorilla suit and a divers helmet. How that
makes him an alien,
or a robot, or whatever, is beyond me. He's about as
scary as a college football
mascot.
So, the story goes that
Ro-Man has destroyed all humanity, except for the
boy & his family
- which now includes the archaeologists (?) as his father
and brother-in-law to
be. You see, the father developed a serum that
protects a human against
all disease. And, the sister developed wire which
when strung around your
house interferes with Ro-Man's life-seeking radar.
However, it does not
fool the Ro-Man leader (called the Great Guidance) back
on planet Ro-Man.
So, now the earth Ro-Man needs to hunt down this family,
and finish his job -
exterminate all Hu-Mans.
Robot Monster is a bad
movie, but not bad in the sense that you hate the
filmmaker or want to
kill the entire cast. You actually feel pity for them.
You can tell they tried
to make a good movie on little to no budget, and
they failed miserably.
But, at the same time, it's rather humorous. The
plot is childish, footage
is reused, the logic is not logical, the science
is not scientific, the
monster is pathetic, the special effects are
laughable. In
one scene with a revolving space station, you can actually
see the hand of the
man holding the rocketship on a stick, moving it around
as it gets hit by Ro-Man's
death ray. And let's not forget the battling
dinosaurs. I'm
sure their existence in the film has a deeper meaning that
just went over my head.
Overall, Robot Monster is a bad movie for bad movie
fans. Low budget,
with a laughable plot and simplistic special effects.
