SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE
(2002)
Featuring a Korean deaf mute

Quick Rating:  ***

This Korean movie is beautifully shot.  The cinematography is fantastic.  It seems every shot was well thought-out.  Details and colors and shadows and angles - it's got some great and memorable imagery.

That being said, this is also one sick movie, that delves into the subject of vengeance.  The story is very compelling as we follow a deaf mute whose sister is dying.  He attempts to save her by going to the organ donor's black market, but that plan fails.  The next scheme that he and his girlfriend think up is one of kidnapping.  They set out to kidnap the daughter of his wealthy boss.  They do so, and sets the actions in motion that could lead to their undoing.

I found the movie very interesting, but at times it was very slow.  Silence was used effectively to relate the main character's condition, but often got boring.  There is some violence in the movie, and while it is brutal, it doesn't seem overdone.  It's an exclamation point on the plot and the action, but it's not overglorified.  The acting seems adequate (always tough to tell when it's not in English), and there are some funny scenes tossed in.  Overall, a good movie, but a little too long.
