TAKING LIVES
(2004)
Starring Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke & Keifer Sutherland
Quick Rating: **
Here we have a suspense/thriller movie, with cops chasing a serial killer.
Hmm.. What a novel idea. You know, I was thinking that Hollywood
doesn't make enough movies about serial killers! Anyway, we're introduced
to the killer as a roaming teen who's first blood gives him a new identity
and the thirst for more.
Years later (present day), he's still "taking lives", in Montreal.
The cops never put together that there was a serial killer until they find
two bodies relatively quickly. In comes an FBI agent (why is an FBI
agent working in Canada?) who likes to lay down in graves and stare at gruesome
crime scene photos as she eats or bathes.
Jolie is once again great to look at. And she does a good job as the
FBI agent Scott. The rest of the cast does well too. Although
Ethan Hawke is odd looking - I never quite "got" him, and Keifer has about
5 minutes of air time. At any rate, the suspence keeps up for a while,
and there are a few scares (even if they don't make sense in retrospect),
but the "twist", if there is one, is not very surprising, and the ending
almost got me. I was (for a second) actually shocked! That's
saying something when I'm shocked by something in a movie. But the
shock quickly fades away, and you realized you've watched a pretty mediocre
film.
Run-of-the-mill, track down a serial killer thriller with a twist.
On the rocks.
Did I mention Angelina Jolie is easy on the eyes?
