MOVIES THE
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2
Thirteen years after the original massacre, chainsaw killings are still occurring in Texas. Dennis Hopper is Lefty, uncle of the kids in the first movie, who has been chasing the chainsaw murderers to get revenge. After a disc jockey accidentally records a new murder and then plays it on the radio, the cannibalistic psycho family shows themselves. Goofier than the original, this movie made me want to vomit - not from the plethora of gory effects (those were laughable) - but rather from the annoying cast and the pathetic plot (not to mention the poor editing and inexplicably bizarre sets). We're supposed to believe that the Sawyer family has been living unnoticed under an amusement park and winning chili cookoffs. And that "Grandpa" at 137 years old is still alive and kicking (and more lively than in the first film), and that a man whose head has been beaten in with a hammer dozens of times is not dead. There are many other holes in the plot, but it doesn't match the number of holes you'd like to shoot in the shrieking DJ "Stretch". Trading in the horror
and insanity of the original for cheap jokes and cheaper effects has never
worked for the sequel. And although some scenes like Dennis Hopper
with an oversized cowboy hat shopping in a chainsaw store might make a
hyena chuckle, most of the comedy doesn't work and most of your time will
be wasted watching this film.
