MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II:
THE
SECRET OF THE OOZE
(1991)
Starring
(& with "music" by) Vanilla Ice

The Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles, pop culture's green disease from the late
80's/early 90's, are
back in this sequel. The turtles, thinking that their
archrival Shredder has
been disposed of, are living it up, eating pizza and
shouting adjectives.
They are living with their friend and Action News
reporter, April O'Neill,
and their sensei mutant rat, Splinter. And this
time they're joined
by pizza delivery boy Keno, who happens to be a master
of martial arts.
Well, as it turns out, you can't keep a good villain down.
Or even a bad one.
Shredder lives, and he regroups his elite ninja
warriors, the Foot.
He also gets his hand on some green ooze, which happens
to be the radioactive
material that created the turtles 15 years earlier.
With this ooze, he mutates
a wolf and a snapping turtles into powerful yet
idiotic freaks with
the purpose of pitting them against the teen shellbacks.
This all leads up to
a final battle, and you can guess who wins.
The movie is very simple
in plot, and the script is on a 7th grader's level,
replete with slang from
the era. Every time one of the turtles says or does
something, he has to
high-five one of his comrades and yell "cowabunga", or
"radical", or some other
such nonsense. The effects aren't bad for puppets,
but they ARE puppets,
so it had the feel of a high-energy Sesame Street
episode. Some
of the martial arts aren't bad, but it's just plain silly to
watch these shelled
heroes jump, flip, and spin-kick. And speaking of
silly, just so you know
the level of movie this is, at one point, the
turtles are fighting
Shredder's freaks, and the battle crashes into the
dance floor of a Vanilla
Ice concert. The "Ice-Man" is inspired by the
ass-kicking and writes
(on the spot!) the Ninja Rap, with catchy lines like
"Go Ninja, Go Ninja,
Go!". And after the 4 beat up the burping villains,
they take time out to
showcase their dance moves. Oh yeah, you know you've
got to see this now!
Overall, it's cheesy but mildly entertaining.
