VERSUS
(2000)

Versus is a Japanese
horror action kung fu flick with tons of gore. Two
prisoners have escaped
from a local prison and seek refuge in a forest.
They meet up with a
team of thugs who were sent to pick them up (and kidnap
a girl along the way),
all per orders of their boss. One of the prisoners
doesn't like their attitudes,
and tempers flare, guns are drawn, blood is
lost. To make
matters worse, those killed quickly "wake up" and are now
zombies. The one
living prisoner and the kidnapped girl escape while the
thugs are battling the
zombies. The chase is now on. It becomes obvious to
all involved (except
the hero) that this forest has strange properties -
maybe the name "Forest
of Resurrection" should have been a clue. And the
thugs realize that this
is where they've buried the bodies of all their
victims. Well,
they're not buried anymore. Many gory scenes ensue,
including gunfights
and martial arts between human and zombie. There is
more going on than just
resurrection in the forest. The ultimate forces of
good and evil must do
battle. And the hero is thrust into this battle.
More blood, guts, and
assorted body parts!
Versus is made on a low
budget, and it's evident. But they do the most they
can, especially when
it comes to gore. There's buckets of blood, slices,
dices, decapitations,
holes blown through bodies, and dismemberments. To
see zombies in a gun
fight, or sword fight is something we don't tend to see
in Western cinema -
so it was nice to see. Some of the acting was over the
top as is more often
the case in Japanese films. The camera movements were
nonstop, even in slow
scenes. I don't know how many times the camera
rotated around the characters.
And there's definitely some cheese factors -
from ridiculous lines
to corny action, not to mention the jokey background
music (the hero gets
rock guitar whenever he's looking stylish!). So, to
sum it up, it's not
a great movie, there's no real plot or high tension, but
there is action, and
fighting zombies!
