ZOMIBE
(1932)
Starring
Bela Lugosi

This classic horror film
stars Bela Lugosi as the leader of a group of
zombies in Haiti.
A young couple have come to the island to be wed, and
they soon learn of the
living dead in the fields. They pass it off as local
folklore and continue
on their journey. The host for their wedding secretly
pines for the bride-to-be,
and has made a deal with Lugosi to have her as
his bride. Bela
has her killed and then brought back as a zombie. Now, the
groom gets drunk and
dreams about his lost love, and the host tries to get
out of his deal with
the zombie-master. Can love conquer death, or rather,
can it conquer undeath?
This film shows its age,
but the cinematography is great, including the use
of shadows, artistic
camera angles, and interesting overlays. The zombie
makeup is remarkable
for its time. The story is mediocre, certainly not
unique, and it does
run slow at times. But the scenery and aforementioned
visuals make up for
it. Bela steals the show (of course), with his bizarre
facial hair and attention-getting
stares. Be careful he doesn't clench his
fists together to command
you to do his bidding!
