ST. JOHN's WORT
(2001)

Here we have a Japanese horror film - one of the best from 2001.  And, I'd have to say it's not bad.  First off, the copy I watched was a VCD and it had english subtitles, so the quality of the video wasn't great and you always miss a little when reading the lines from a movie rather than listening to them.  That being said, St. John's Wort was interesting, scary, and imaginative.

A video game designer uses his ex-girlfriend Nami as inspiration for his newest game.  They visit her newly inherited mansion, and Blair Witch style suspense ensues.  They slowly discover secrets about the house and about Nami's past.

The movie combines their adventure with the video game, and at times it's tough to tell which is which.  The cinematography is great, with camera angles and movements straight out of a David Fincher flick.  The pace was occasionally slow, and the story, although it does contain some good plot twists, is thin.  But it is a horror movie, and there are a few terrifying images that get stuck in your head.  St. John's Wort has a lot of style and suspense, but it is also slow and has several weak plot points.
