ZOMBIE
(1979)
Directed by Lucio Fulci

I have heard about this movie for some time, and when I found it on DVD relatively cheap, it was a no-brainer to pick it up.  From the recommendations, I was expecting a zombie movie on par with Romero's.  That I did not find.  What I did find was still an enjoyable zombie flick with good gore and a bit of T&A (that never hurts!).

An unmanned boat shows up in New York harbor, and a coast guardsman ends up as a zombie victim.  The daughter of the boat's owner and an investigator team up to find out what happened.  This leads them to the Caribbean, where voodoo or a disease (They never really tell us which) have caused the dead to walk again.  Then we're treated to some gruesome zombie attacks, and the old standoff with zombies surrounding a house with the humans inside.

The acting in this italian film was decent, and the action was ok.  What makes this movie is the special effects - the living dead are dirty, worm invested, and rotting.  The flesh eating is stomach turning.  The only problem is that there isn't enough of it.  I have to give Fulci some artistic credit with a few of his scenes (including one involving a nude diver, a shark, and an underwater zombie), but overall, I was somewhat disappointed by his zombie masterpiece... but that's only because it was compared to Romero's zombie flicks, and that's just unfair.  This is still a must-see for zombie fans.
