Total Media Whore! by Angie Dickensert "I'm a total media whore!" is one of the more memorable lines uttered in Eugenia Chan's short documentary film Peaches Christ Superstar. The film's subject and title character is San Francisco drag luminary Peaches Christ, as well as, her alter ego Joshua Grannell. Superstar screens this summer as part of the "Fun in Drag Queen Shorts" program at the 2002 SF International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The film is narrated by Grannell himself and intercut with crazy images of Christ in action. Whether she's hosting her Midnight movie series, appearing on her cable access TV show (Canned Peaches), performing a lip synch, or acting in a film, she seems larger than life, sometimes even frightening. Grannell speaks matter of factly about how all of these things come together to create a media vehicle exposing his artwork. If he's made a new film or is doing a number at Trannyshack he feels that media manipulation is key to attracting his audience. In addition to being featured in the short documentary at this summer's Film Festival Peaches co-stars in a short film, Season of the Troll, best described as a horror comedy, emphasis on the comedy. The film was written and directed by Grannell and co-stars friends and sidekicks Martiny, and Jennifer Taher as "Troll Girl". Season of the Troll screens as part of the Outer Limits program reserved for "out there" films who's place in the fest is difficult to categorize. The plot revolves around Martiny falling violently ill after she overdoses on cheese. Had I not seen Grannell in Superstar I would never know it's him when I meet him for coffee one sunny afternoon in the Castro. Only after speaking with him for thirty minutes or so do I see Peaches elements oozing out. We start the conversation seriously but by finish Grannell is cackling as only Ms. Christ could. Grannell says that he's thrilled Season of the Troll is enjoying a festival run but really wants to move on to the next project. "That film was made for a Halloween drag event", he says, "and we submitted it to these fests on a lark. It's great that more people are getting to see it but I really want to move onto something more filmic." Grannell is adamant about the fact that the next short film he's shooting this August will not feature Peaches. "I get sick of her sometimes. It's a love hate relationship. We're shooting the film at the tail end of our Midnight Mass run because that's what works best for the lead actress. I know I'll be really sick of Peaches by then. It will be nice to focus on stuff behind the camera and let someone else worry about being on." Grannell says that he will continue making films somewhere between the horror and comedy genres while continuing to work with the same creative team of people he's worked with for years. "I feel really lucky to have the friends I do. I'm great friends with the cinematographer, the editor, the costumier, my graphics person, the website designer and prop maker. I was friends with all of them before we started working together creatively. I feel really fortunate to know people like this, even Martiny." Peaches Christ first came onto the San Francisco nightlife scene six years ago when she began performing at the legendary drag club Trannyshack. Trannyshack has been the one drag club Peaches performs at on a regular basis. "It continues to be amazing", Grannell announces. "It's the most inspiring and irreverent drag show in the world and I really don't think I'm exagerating". It wasn't until five years ago though that Ms. Christ really began to make a name for herself in the bay area. It was then that she debuted her Midnight Mass movie series; a cavalcade of camp, horror, and exploitation films each with its own special pre-show entertainment and audience involvement. Some of the more memorable events over the years have been Mommie Dearest with Mother / Daughter mudwrestling, Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! with Drag Queen Roller Derby, Desperate Living with celebrity guest Mink Stole, and the annual screening of Showgirls where Peaches offers her audience "Free Lapdances with Every Large Corn". The popular movie series has become an SF Institution with fans lining up week after week excitedly waiting for the mayhem to begin. At this point, the 400+ person audtorium sells out every Midnight Mass show it hosts and tickets have been such hot commodities that they've even been scalped on Craig's List. This comes after naysayers in the exhibition industry warned Grannell that the midnight movie heyday had come and gone. Peaches has been asked to do the series on a more regular basis and so she's considering hosting the event sporadically throughout the year. In between running Midnight Mass and performing at Trannyshack, Peaches has found time to host special events for friends and charities, hosted her own cable access show (Canned Peaches), and mounted an out of town overnight Halloween Spectacular with friend's Vinsantos and Putanesca. The Russian River Massacre event premiered last year and drew hundreds of people to the small town of Guerneville for a weekend filled with Halloween fun featuring four different spooky events over a two night weekend. The one thing managing all of this chaos is Peaches' online home: www.peacheschrist.com. The website is always changing to reflect current film projects, performances, and events. It even offers the visitor his or her astrological "whoreoscopes" by Martiny, admission into Peaches' Fan Club, and soon a Gift Shop where visitors will be able to purchase videos of the films, tv show, and buy Ms. Christ's personal line of t-shirts, buttons, and stickers. "The website has really become an online archive of what we do. People can access photos of us, information about events, and soon purchase a video. We try to keep it current so that the content directly relates to what's going on in our world. I avoided doing any sort of online commerce for so long cuz I thought it was tacky. Enough people asked for things like copies of Canned Peaches that I figured it was time. Besides, what's wrong with a poor tranny trying to make an honest buck?". Nothing, but you are a media whore darlin'. |
