Types of Frogs
(In New York State)
American Bullfrog
The American Bullfrog is the largest frog in North America, reaching a length of anywhere between three and eight inches. They are a green or a yellow colour, generally with a lighter belly.

Gray Treefrog
The Gray Treefrog is greenish or brownish in colour and roughly 1-3 inches long. The undersides of their thighs are generally a bright yellow-orange colour. They are found in trees and shrubs near bodies of water.

Green Frog
Green Frogs are commonly found in Western New York and can reach a length of 2-4 inches. They are found usually in shallow bodies of water. The female Green Frog can lay up to 1000 eggs at a time.

Mink Frog
The Mink Frogs grow to be, on average, 2-3 inches in length. They are usually green, brown, or an olive colour. The female can lay up to 4000 eggs, which she lays deep under the water. (up to 3 feet down)

Northern Leopard Frog
These frogs can be found near just about any body of water. They generally grow to 2-5 inches in length and are a brown or green with dark spots that have light outlines.

Northern Spring Peeper
The Spring Peeper is a tiny frog that rarely gets larger than one inch. They are usually a brown, green or a grey colour and have dark markings on the back in the shape of an 'X'.

Pickerel Frog
The Pickerel Frog is generally anywhere between 1 and 3.5 inches in length and is usually tan with rows of dark squares. Theird bodies secrete toxins that keep away predators and can even kill other frogs.

Southern Leopard Frog
This frog is found anywhere from southern New York to Florida state. It is about 2-4 inches in length and has markings similar to those of the Northern Leopard Frog.

Western Chorus Frog
This small frog rarely gets longer than one inch, and is usually a brownish-green or a grey in colour. It generally has three stripes going down it's back, with another one on each thigh.

Wood Frog
The Wood Frog is 1.5-3 inches in length and generally a tan, brown or pink colour. They have a dark stripe on each side of the head and a dark blotch on the chest with a lighter belly.
