Both of these wines were consumed with a home made Lobster Newberg during a belated holiday get-together. Both had an obviously mild, almost dumb nose due to chilling.
Domaine Vincent Giardin - 2001 - Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru - Morgeot - $42
This is a quality wine, although I would not consider it to be a value buy. I tasted this wine at room temperature. It's fairly rich with many levels of flavour. Being in a rush, I poured the wine into a carafe with several ice cubes. It is an excellent compliment to any sort of light crustacean or mollusk dish. Inexplicably, the apparent slight dryness of the wine and minute fruit boquet was offset by undesirable watery characteristics. Let us just say that the body was not exactly full, suitable for a summer afternoon sipping. Overall, I would recommend this as a compliment to almost any seafood dish. Spare yourself the purchase if you do not have the cash to throw around. I cannot fathom spending $42 on this premier without bieng well off.
Dopff & Irion Pinot Blanc - Alsace - 2001 - $12
This wine was consumed mostly with a bread, balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil dip appetiser, and also enjoyed with the Lobster Newberg dish, this wine has an almost perfect balance between dryness and fruityness; only slightly dry. Almost stalky. I do caution that if it is allowed to deviate from the chilling temperature, it begins to take on a much more dry characteristic. The finish is very acidic if not consumed chilled.
