EFFECTS OF STRIKING THE SPINAL COLUMN
To many times we, in the Martial Arts have accidentally hit our sparring partners in the back. Fortunately most of the time the strike lacked the proper focus and power to do any real damage, but what could happen is outlined below. As martial arts Instructors and Students, we must be aware of the potential dangerous damage that even an accidental strike or kick to the area of the spinal column can cause.
The Spine is broken down into four segments:
Each disk and its associated nerves is named with a number-letter
combination.
In the Martial Art of Sungja Do, we practice self-defense by using
these Spinal "Vital Points" as striking targets, just as we use the
pressure points on the arms, legs and the front of the body.
Care must be taken when using the Spinal Column as a target, but the effectiveness of the techniques to these areas means it is a must for our self-defense practice.
