Information

Hostbody is a fanzine, based around music but not exclusively.  It is available in Britain by post, for £1 and a stamped self-addressed envelope.  If you would like a copy but live outside of Britain, email for details.  Swaps with other zines are welcome, but email me first to check.  Contents vary from issue to issue.  May contain explicit language but nothing else!   Hostbody is printed in monochrome, but is fully illustrated.

Creator and Contributors

Hostbody is written mainly by myself Martha, and my various alter egos.  There are different contributors each issue, and I encourage readers to post me their work, whether it’s poetry, rants, reviews articles, or artwork, all is considered.  However, I will not print anything sexist, racist, homophobic, violent, or that promotes hate.  As the editor, I have final say on this, so don’t mess!  All contributors will be credited for their work.

Current Issue

Issue 2 – First issue titled Hostbody.  £1

LOADS of reviews of everything that’s kick-ass, be it gigs, records, demos, festivals, books, or films.  Kewl quotes, guitar tab, poetry, features on Courtney Love, patronising advertising and “Girl Power – Cheap gimmick or true female spirit?”  More short stories and rants on sexist jokes, teen angst and fashion culture.  With a gorgeous centre fold poster of Hole and the Manic Street Preachers, how can you resist?

Back Issues

Back issues are available, but if you’re sending for more than one zine, don’t forget to increase the postage accordingly, or else you may never receive them! (The post office is stingy like that.)

Issue 1 – Titled Elvis’s Undies.  (Same zine, different name!).  £1

Cover picture of a moody shot of Elvis.  This zine was featured on Channel Four’s Planet Sound.  Issue 1 has articles on JJ72, why I hate Mel C, live reviews of Skunk Anansie, Blondie, and Fun Lovin’ Criminals, reviews of Hole, The Donnas, Elastica, The Pixies and more.  It also features thoughts on anorexia, bullying and feminism, articles on Skunk Anansie and Courtney Love, along with a guitar tablature page, short stories and abstract poetry.  Centrefold poster of Kurt Cobain and VyVyan is the proverbial cherry on top!

History

I started Hostbody, or Elvis’s Undies as it was known then, in October 1999, after being involved passively in the zine scene for about 6 months.  I thought, Hey, I can do this! And that’s how it all started.  There was quite a delay between this decision, and the first issue actually hitting the presses, mainly due to my inexperience with desktop publishing creating havoc with the layout and text…However I did manage to sort it, and so my fanzine was born!  The name Elvis’s Undies came about because it was the seediest thing I could think of to do with great, god-like music.   Other underwear related suggestions like Kurt’s Keks, Courtney’s Corset, and Sid’s Socks (!) all fell by the wayside.  However, after the first issue, I was so totally fed up of explaining that I decided a change in title was needed (it was a damn stoopid name anyway…).  And so, after much careful debate, I settled on Hostbody, as that’s what the zine was, a host-body for my evil spirit to possess!  This time to avoid more computer crises, it’s all done punk style i.e. by hand, using slightly-messier-but-more-reliable cut and paste techniques.  Issue three may well be a concept issue…Are you ready?  Check back here for more info later!
