Location Northland
Northland includes all of the country north of Greater Auckland. This relatively narrow peninsula is New Zealand's northern-most region, reaching towards Polynesia, the home of its earliest inhabitants. Of particular interest and beauty are the Far North and the Bay of Islands.General Information
The sub-tropical (colloquially the "Winterless") north is a land of rolling, sometimes rugged countryside, tidal estuaries and mangroves, sparkling island-studded bays and long sandy beaches. Remnants of lush sub-tropical forest featuring giant kauris, which are among the largest trees in the world, remain in the more rugged areas. Northland is an area of historical importance, and is the region where Maori and European signed the Treaty of Waitangi that joined them as one nation.Best known Attractions/Activities
This region is a paradise for anyone who enjoys being around, in, or under the water. With 144 islands, the Bay of Islands is renowned for diving, boating, swimming and big game fishing. Both near the coast and inland, tramping tracks (hiking trails) and short walks in the native forests lead to some of the most beautiful scenery (and some of the largest and oldest trees) in the world. As one of the first regions visited and settled by Europeans, Northland has the oldest European villages and many historic buildings.
