Research Tips
Where to start?
For those of you who are just beginning to research our family I would suggest
starting with family members, you'll be surprised at what they can tell you.
Equally as valuable, if not more so, is obtaining birth and death certificates
on every one, beginning with yourself, if you don't have one already, then your
father [and/or mother], and so on. This will only work 3 or 4 generations at
most, back to the late 1800’s or so, when the "States" began keeping
these types of records. Before then, local church records were the main source
for birth's/baptisms and deaths. Also, many article’s have been written and/or
published by the local or state "Genealogical Societies" on many
different families, such as the one published by the New York Genealogical &
Biographical Society, titled "Mathys
Coenradtsen Houghtaling of Coxsackie, NY and His Descendants". Another
well-known but smaller bio named, Anna's Diary,
which is very informative, along with searchable
database's, not only "Our
Family Tree", but we also have: census records, militia rolls,
interments, as well as, an assortment of articles of
interest (photo's, documents, etc...), relative to the family. Also,
our Dutch Reference page is an invaluable source of
info on Dutch names and naming practices, as well as, common Dutch occupations,
terminologies and typical spelling variations.

it comes to on-line info, even ours. Due to the many sources who have
contributed info to our project, we can NOT guarantee the accuracy of the info

proof you're seeking. When available, sources are noted within, if you do
find any mistakes, we would appreciate a note, so we can correct it.

Resource: Site's are broken down into individual state and county site's, each county varies but, most of them have a lot of useful tool's, when it comes to research. Besides the usual church and census records and cemetery transcripts, they have local histories, early settler's name's, old county maps of different time periods, which come in handy because counties change over the years.
