Hot or Not
Cabinet Edition
FAQ
1. This site confuses and frightens me. What is Hot or Not all about?
Hot or Not is a fiendishly simple
website envisioned by two Berkeley not-quite-graduates in October of 2000. A picture of a
man or woman is displayed on the screen, and the viewer rates that picture on a scale of 1-10
(10 being hottest). As soon as the picture is ranked, another one appears. Give
it a try, it's dangerously addictive.
2. OK, so you put President Bush's entire cabinet on Hot or Not?
That's right, we put every cabinet member on Hot or Not for about a month to see how they would be
rated. Depending on how long they were up the number of votes varied, but the majority of the cabinet
got over 100 votes each. Women in the cabinet got thousands of votes because men are far more
superficial and therefore more likely to rate women on the website.
3. If you put every cabinet member up, where's Condi?
Believe it or not, Condoleezza Rice is not a member of the cabinet. Instead she sits on the
National Security Council along with the Vice President and several cabinet members.
4. But what about Donald Rumsfeld? I know he's part of the cabinet.
Why isn't he ranked?
You're right, Mr. Rumsfeld does sit on the cabinet as Secretary of Defense. Unfortunately,
Hot or Not has a policy of prohibiting pictures of famous people from being posted on its
site. While the Hot or Not censors failed to recognize most cabinet members (including
Colin Powell and Vice President Cheney), they caught our picture of Rumsfeld. We encourage
you to write to us with your rank of the SecDef.
5. I've looked at your site, and I'm surprised that my favorite cabinet
member received such a low rank. What gives?
Context counts for a lot on Hot or Not. Because the censors would likely catch "official"
pictures of the cabinet, we had to find amateur images that made them look like ordinary
people. But those images can either inflate or deflate a member's rating. Take, for example,
these two images of Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge:
|
|
7.2 220 Votes
|
8.1 307 Votes
|
As you can clearly see, the picture of Mr. Ridge holding a baby with a sheriff's badge
scored much higher than the one of Ridge alone.
5. I'm in the opposite camp, I can't believe these guys can score
above a 2. Why are they getting 7s and 8s?
To understand why the cabinet has ranked so well, it might be beneficial to look at a
few other pictures from the "men over 40" section of the website:
