TARAPOTO:
The city of Tarapoto is one of the principal cities of the Peruvian Amazon and capital of the Municipalidad Provincial de San Martin. According to the census of 1993, Tarapoto has a population of 54,660 and the Province of San Martin 116,005. The city was founded on the August 20, 1,782 by the Bishop of Trujillo Monseñor Baltazar Martinez de Compagñon.
Tarapoto is located at 76º West longitude and 6º 30´ South latitude, on the edge of the Amazon basin in N.E. Peru halfway on a direct line from Lima to Iquitos, 50 minutes by air and 35 hours by highway from Lima. There is daily air service between Tarapoto and Lima by Aerocontinente and TANS and several bus companies provide transportation from Lima, Trujillo and Chiclayo.
The elevation of Tarapoto is 353 m.a.s.l. and the Province of San Martin has a variation from 120 m.a.s.l. to 1,600 m.a.s.l. Because of the altitude and surrounding mountains, Tarapoto has a cooler climate than other major cities in the Peruvian Amazon. The average daytime temperature is 29°C and varies from 18°C to 34°C. The dry seasons are from June to October and December to February and rainy seasons February to June and October to Dicember with heaviest rains in March and April and the dryest period in July, August and September.
Tarapoto is known as the City of Palms and the name is said to be derived from a type of palm tree that grows in the jungles of San Martin, the Taraputus
