Midgar's buildings towered above all else in the world but the Shinra Building. The Shinra Building stood in the center of the great city, glowing in it's artificial lights and towering above everyone's heads. There was a building that wasn't very tall, but was still admired. It was the theater, where operas and plays continued to show throughout the bad times of Midgar. Even now, the musical poster known as Loveless was plastered to the wall.
A cigarette fell to the ground, a tendril of gray smoke trailing up, milling with the smog in the air. A black boot fell upon the cigarette, smothering out the orange flame at the end. The man having done this shoved his black gloved hands deep in his pockets of his white trench coat. Underneath it he wore the uniform of an Angel.
"Loveless," he muttered.
For as long as he was a boy growing up in Midgar, that play had been showing there at this theater known as Shinra Theater. The owner of the old rotting building had named it after the Shinra Building in respect, but the young Angel outside knew better than to think President Shinra would have appreciated it. In fact, he knew President Shinra hadn't cared one bit.
He would know, because this particular Angel was known as Rufus Shinra, son of the President Shinra, and almost as sour as his father. Rufus had angered his father when he had given up his position as Vice-President of Shinra to a man named Reeve to join the Angels. Even when giving up the job, Rufus was still respected more than the other Angels and was aloud to as much as he pleased. He didn't take orders from Hunter Roberts but only when he wanted to.
Rufus' gaze again fell to the Theater when a loud explosion filled his ears. The young Angel was quick with his senses and watched as nearby a fire burst from a hidden tunnel. Five unusual figures emerged, each running in the direction of Sector 7. Rufus was confused, but he didn't think much of it.
Taking each stride long a true he continued back toward the Theater in time to see a crazed citizen knock a young woman in a pale pink dress to the ground. Rufus was never one to think much of others, but he stooped down and pulled the girl to her feet.
"Are you all right?," he asked.
His cold blue eyes met large emerald green eyes belonging to the girl. For a moment, or more, he gazed into her green eyes in surprise. Shaking his head he was more surprised with himself. He released the woman's arm as she dropped down to pick up a basket of flowers she had dropped.
"I'm fine, thank you," she replied.
Rufus nodded, "You should be more careful." He looked to the flowers she held. "Flowers... I never see many of those in Midgar."
The woman's face brightened. She dusted her dress of quickly, and tucked a strand of light brown from her face, flashing those green eyes at Rufus again. He quickly shook his head.
"Do you like them?," she asked. "They're only one gil."
Rufus cracked a brief, and rare, smile. He took one flower from the girl, and set five gil in her hand gently. She looked at the amount he had given her and opened her mouth to speak. He simply smiled and continued on his way.
He watched the excited people of Midgar run around from the explosion, wires were sparking and some stones had fallen from the buildings' frames. He thought nothing of it though. Hunter had told him about a terrorist group called AVALANCHE planning to make an attack upon the Reactors. He never thought much of it because it was the Turks' job to deal with terrorists.
His hands still shoved deep within his pockets he headed toward the train station to join some people. Lilith and Cloud had been sent to find AVALANCHE's hide out to speak with the leader of AVALANCHE. Personally, Rufus believed there was no chance of getting anything out of the leader of AVALANCHE from what he had heard of the man.
He heard the familiar sounds of an engine screeching to a stop as the train approached. Rufus glanced at his watch to see what time it was. 9:07 p.m.. They were due at 9:00 p.m., but every train in Midgar always did end up running late. He sighed as the doors opened, waiting for Cloud and Lilith to appear so that he could return to his apartment near the Shinra Building to get some sleep.
He spotted the unmistakable head of spikey golden blonde hair to Cloud, and then the black hair of Lilith. He agreered with what Hunter had once told him. In the light Lilith's hair looked as though there was purple streaks to it. Striding forward he grabbed Cloud's sleeve and pulled him away from the crowds, Lilith following close behind.
"How did it go?," Rufus asked.
Cloud glanced at Lilith, receiving the same expression held on his face. It hadn't gone well of course. Lilith was the one to speak though.
"Not good," she told Rufus. "We only heard AVALANCHE was going to blow up a reactor and-"
"And it's already happened," Cloud cut in.
Rufus nodded. Somehow, he had expected this to happen. True, this was only a common terrorist group threatening the same things he had many times before. To stop Shinra and their uses of Mako energy. It was the same thing he had heard throughout his life, and was getting tiring. He said nothing to Lilith and Cloud, but simply led them on to the Shinra Building.
