Strengths and Weaknesses
In interviews many a times the candidate is asked to elaborate on his
strengths and weaknesses . This is an opportunity for the candidate to
gloat over his so called strengths and suppress his weaknesses or state
these in such a way that they can be perceived as strengths .
Come to think of it , do you really have strengths or weaknesses ?
All I have is qualities . There are different aspects to these qualities
and there are different ways in which these qualities of me manifest
themselves . None of them are strengths and none of them are weaknesses
per se . Whether these turn out to be strengths or weaknesses will be
dependent on the time , place and circumstances .
For example , in one of my earlier jobs , quality of attending to the
detail was proving to be my nemesis . My boss wanted quick and dirty
solutions while I believed in detailed research . What results he
expected to get in days , took me weeks to deliver . Once this became
clear , and I realised that his satisfaction with the bottom line took
priority over my satisfaction of details , I became very highly
productive . Now what he wanted in days , I delivered in hours or
sometimes in minutes , using all kinds of shortcuts , and quick and
dirty methods .
Take Rahul Dravid . Technically the best batsman we have in the Indian
team , but for this precise quality he is being dropped from the Indian
one dayer squad .
Many examples on similar lines can be given .
Ponder for a few moments on the qualities which are generally taken as
weaknesses .
Anger : It is passion . Procrastination : It is the ability to be
patient , ability to stay
