DEVIL'S CLAW HERB

This is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Pedaliaceae family from South Africa.
The main constituents are three glycosides- harpagide,herpagoside and procumbide.Also found in the plant is beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol, unsaturated fatty acids, triterpenes, flavonoids, cinnamic acid, chlorogenic acid.
 Devils claw seems to have anti rheumatic and antiphlogistic properties similar to to pyrazolone derivatives and phenylbutazone. There is also some analgesic action.
It is mainly indicated for arthritic and low pain pain from spondylosis, rheumatoid arthritis, neuralgia, headaches.. It is said to relieve pain and improving mobility in joints and general well being. One can inject it around the affected joint.

 It is also used as a bitter tonic for gastrointestinal complaints mostly for dyspeptic conditions in epigastrium with meteorism and for gallbladder complaints. Zimmerman published papers on beneficial results in the upper duodenum with pancreatic involvement.
