If all nails show the same problem it is usually due to an internal disease process. The most common problems is damage due to trauma and fungal infections.
Trauma especially to toenails often causes the nail to thicken. this is permanent. Treatment is drilling the nail down by a podiatrist and permenant removal of nail should be a last resort.
Fungal nails also make the nail thick. Treatment can be by lacquers and creams such as bactrafen, loceryl, daktarin, or internally by lamasil, sporanox, griseofulvin. Natural treatments includes tea tree oil. This can be bought from the footshop.
