The Surgery

The Surgery There are several different procedure in use to correct sagittal synostosis. All of them involve the removal of part of the bones of the skull, so that there is no impediment to normal growth of the brain and skull. Our children had a "Strip Craniectomy" In this procedure, a strip of bone is removed along the sagittal suture. The strip is 2.5 to 3.5cm (1 to 1 ½ inches) wide by 15 to 18 cm (6 to 7 inches) long. The incision was a straight line along the sagittal suture. In some other surgeries, the incisions are made from ear to ear, either in a straight line or a zig-zag. Sometimes more pieces of bone are removed than in the strip craniectomy. These are usually to correct the forehead formation. We have heard of surgeries where chemicals are added to slow down new bone growth and where plates are added to replace bone removed. There is also at least one doctor in the US doing an endoscopic surgery with two small incisions and a helmet used for a few months after. We do not have information on the successfulness of these procedures.
